BETWEEN NOW AND NOVEMBER 3 2020, ALL SALES FROM THIS SONG GO STRAIGHT DOWN TO THE BIDEN CAMPAIGN!!
Martin Wynne wrote the original melody of the tune featured here. Despite his intelligence and ability, Martin was forced to leave Ireland because of economic repression and lack of opportunity. In America, he worked at the post office. Other musicians sought him out, craving his excellence as a musician and kindness as a man and teacher. Not only is this melody fantastic, we felt for Martin's story: Ireland's colonial history and anti-Irish sentiment in England meant this man was forced to leave his home and friends, or live as a second-class person. We are glad that, in his later years, Martin was recognized for his musical brilliance and was celebrated both in his native Sligo and his adopted city New York.
"The Other Side" is about how we wish we were better than we are, preferably more physically fit, more kind and compassionate, and better informed and more productively involved in politics. It features some of the new voices of the Gertrudes: Michelle Girouard, our new favourite single mom/grad student singer; Jason Mercer, who moved to Kingston from New York just in time; and seven-year-old George, who was previously featured as the fetal heartbeat that opened the "Neighbourhood" album. The rest of us remain the same: aspiring country stars stuck on page 84 of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

The Other Side ( lyrics )
On the other side we’ll find that we all have left some things behind
(Come out, come out, come out, come out! Like a new-made man)
All the outlaws are on the dance floor
All the lovers are coming out the parlour doors
I’m looking out of your windowpane
Not climbing back for more of the same
I’m coming out the other side like a new-made man
(Come out, come out, come out, come out! Like a new-made man)
When all the water has been turned to gold
And all the lovers have been bought and sold
I’ll be the ghost in your windowpane
Not climbing back for more of the same
I’m coming out the other side like a new-made man
I won’t come out! I won’t come out the other side that I came in!
I won’t come out! I won’t come out the other side that I came in!
On the other side you’ll find that we all have left some things behind
And you’ll find us in the yard amidst the flowers and falling stars
All the outlaws are on the dance floor
All the lovers are coming out the parlour doors
I’m looking out of your windowpane
Not climbing back for more of the same
I’m coming out the other side like a new-made man
(Come out, come out, come out, come out! Like a new-made man)
On the other side you’ll find that we all have left some things behind

The Gertrudes sound like an ol’ time saloon party in deep space … experimental noise beds with down home folk passengers, frolicking through original material, played by a veritable orchestra of instruments.
